Tricky Little App
Since getting my iPhone from freebiejeebies, I had always been a little disappointed that I was unable to tether it with my laptop without jail breaking it first or paying an extortionate fee to my mobile carrier. I retrospect of the matter, I don’t really have any use for tethering capabilities, it’s just that I don’t like the idea that Apple feel I shouldn’t be able to do what I want with my own iPhone.
Not long ago, an previously unknown development company published a small flash light app on the Apple market place. There are hundreds of flash light applications already available, a simple app that fills you screen with a solid color so you can use your screen as a flash light, the app’s popularity is purely due to it being incredibly easy to make, rather than it’s usefulness. Apple obviously passed this one over, authorising it to be sold on the app store, unaware of what hidden features it may have.
The flash light app was just a cover, it’s original purpose was to allow people to tether their iPhones without Apple or their carrier’s specific permission, taking advantage of their phone’s data plans. Since there is nothing technically illegal about this apart from it being a violation of the app store’s terms and conditions, the app was pulled from the market place but anybody who bought the app, for only $0.99, during the time that it was up got to keep it and are probably still using it to this day. A kick in the teeth for anyone who missed out and are still paying the high price to their carriers for tethering, but for those lucky few, a real gift.
