How To Dunk: Going Vertical
Learning how to dunk a basketball is all about mechanics-and height (but less height than one might think). Most people have seen the professional basketball player Mugsy Bugsy. He was a short man, by any standards and still able to dunk the basketball. He was professional, and his only job was to train and play the game, so not everyone should expect to dunk if they are not at least six foot tall. However, if a player is at least six feet tall, the major part of how to dunk comes from mechanics.
Learning to use muscle energy on vertical instead of lateral will increase any jumper’s height quickly. Jumping off of one leg, while thrusting the other leg forcefully upward from a sprint, can add an extra six to eight inches to the vertical height of the jump as long as the player knows how to harness that energy upward. The rest depends on strength and jump training.
